Stock Availability

The item I would like to order shows as out of stock, and does not have an ETA. What do I do?

This occurs with products that are either new or very popular and in short supply. We receive stock weekly, but there are times when a product is in constrained supply, so these items will constantly reflect online as out of stock. The best advice we can give you is to place an order and get your name on the reserve list, as this is the only way to ensure that you get one allocated to you.

You are not obligated by this order and can cancel at any time, but if you wait for the stock to show in stock before you place your order you probably will not get one. The only way to keep you options open is to put your name on the reserve list. If the item is a new release from Apple the lead time is usually 6 weeks. If it is not new but a popular item the lead time is usually 2 weeks. Note this is an estimate based on previous experiance, and is intended as a guide.

Apple iPod & iTunes

How can I connect an iPod to a Windows Computer?

The iPod is able to connect to a Windows Computer via a USB2.0 port. Only the iPod shuffle is able to connect using USB 1.1. The iPod nano and the larger iPods require USB 2.0. All iPods ship standard with a USB 2.0 cable.

How do I charge my iPod if it does not ship with a charger?
When the iPod is connected to the computer it will chage via the USB port.
(This is dependant on the power availalble on your USB2.0 port. Some USB ports are unable to charge the iPod.)

Do I need an iPod Dock to connect and charge my iPod?
The iPod has the same connector on it as the Dock does.
This allows the cable from the computer or charging source to plug directly into the iPod, or into the Dock, whichever is more convenient.

Does the iPod work with Windows 95, 98 or ME?
No the iPod and it’s iTunes software requires Windows 2000 or Windows XP. The iPod of course also works with the entire Apple Macintosh range.

What types of music files does the iPod support?
The iPod supports MP3 WAV and AAC file formats. In addition the iTunes software supports and convert Red Book Audio (CD Standard) and WMA file formats into either MP3 or AAC formats. AAC is the audio component of MPEG 4, and so AAC files are smaller and are better quality than MP3 files, and therefore are the recommended format. (See Technical info below for more info on music formats)

Can I buy music online from the iTunes Music Store?
At this time, due to the legacy of music distribution rights, the iTunes Music Store only sells to persons whose credit card has a billing address in one of 21 countries. (SA not included) At some point in the future SA may be added, but many larger markets than ourselves, still do not have access to the iTunes store, and so we will have to patiently wait our turn.
Using the iTunes software you can browse the store and listen to 30sec of any song, but persons outside of the 21 countries cannot purchase. You can access & download the hundreds of pod-casts from the store which are free.
If you do not have the iTunes software, you can download it from www.apple.com.

If I can not buy music online, how do I get music into my iPod?
The included iTunes software allows you to copy music from your own CD collection into your iPod.

Online Store General

Are the estimated shipping times I see online accurate?

Any items that show as 'in stock' will be couriered to within 48 hours of confirmation that your payment reflects in our bank account. Deliveries to the major cities in South Africa is usually 48 hours and is delivered, to your door. Larger items may take a day longer. Deliveries to smaller centers may take a few days.
On items that are out of stock, the online store uses an automated system that estimates (based on passed shipments) how long a product will take to get to us from the time we order it from Apple. Since we invariably have existing orders in the pipeline, the estimates shown are usually an over estimate. We continue to improve the accuracy of this information, but particularly on popular products we advise you to get your order into the queue as soon as possible.

Where is the Online Store situated and can I collect my order from you?
The ZA Store is exclusively an online entity. We have no physical showroom for customers to visit. To keep costs, and prices as low as possible, we offer a no frills service and keep overheads to a minimum. The Johannesburg based warehouse that we use has no facility for customer collections. All products are shipped, via couriers, usually free of charge to any address in South Africa.

Do you sell the AppleCare extended protection plan?
Unfortunately this product is not offered to South Africa at this time, so we are unable to supply.

Technical information

Can I use USB2.0 devices like the iPod with my USB1.1 port?

Some USB2.0 Devices maybe “backward compatible” with USB1.1 ports but are limited to USB1.1 speed. The iPod needs the added speed of USB2.0, and so it does not work with USB1.1.

Can I use USB 1.1 devices with my USB2.0 port?
Any USB device, (1.1 or 2.0), can be used on a USB2.0 port but the USB2.0 port will not make your 1.1 devices work at USB2.0 speeds.

What is the difference between MP3, AAC and the other music formats
MP3
is the file format of MPEG, audio layer 3 for the compression of audio signals. Layer 3 uses perceptual audio coding and psychoacoustic compression to remove all superfluous information (more specifically, the redundant and irrelevant parts of a sound signal. The stuff the human ear doesn't hear anyway). The result is that layer 3 shrinks the original sound data from a CD by a factor of 12 without sacrificing sound quality.

AAC Short for Advanced Audio Coding, is the audio compression format defined by the MPEG-4 standard. AAC boasts higher quality audio reproduction than MP3 and requires 30% less data to do so.

Red Book Audio, is the standard for audio CDs, developed by Phillips and Sony. The specification is formally known as Compact Disc-Digital Audio (CD-DA). It specifies up to 74 minutes of digital audio transferred at 150 Kbps.

WAV
is the format for storing sound in files, first built into Windows 95 making it the de-facto standard for sound on PCs. WAV sound files end with a.wav extension and can be played by nearly all Windows applications that support sound.

WMA Short for Windows Media Audio, is a newer Microsoft file format for encoding digital audio files similar to MP3 though it can compress files at a higher rate than MP3.
